Though Shaylin Nutile, a teacher at The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) Michael F. Downey Center for Child Development, has only been at NECC for just under a year, she has already made quite an impact. “Ms. Shay” was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a parent whose son has thrived under her care, thanks to her “passion, patience, and natural talent working with kids.” The nominator continued, “It is clear that Ms. Shay loves her students and puts her all into making sure they are learning and are cared for and loved. We thank our lucky stars for our son having an amazing, committed, and knowledgeable teacher. We can’t thank her enough for loving our son and appreciating his unique and silly personality.”
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is watching the children learn and grow. These early stages of learning are the most exciting and important part of a child’s life and to know I play a role in contributing to that is beyond rewarding. It fills my heart with so much joy!
Why did you choose a career in working with children?
I chose to work with children not only because it’s rewarding but also because I’m passionate about teaching them. Something about watching a child progress in both academic and life skills is another level of happiness.
Why NECC?
I wanted to join NECC because I had heard great things about the organization. I have my associate’s degree in early childhood education, and I’m currently going to school for speech language pathology. I figured that with my experience and love of working with children, I could be part of the day care team, and, hopefully, one day be part of the SLP team!
What is something your colleagues might be surprised to learn about you?
Some people might already know this, but I am a licensed professional hair stylist. I do hair for weddings and events as a side gig. I love making people feel special and beautiful on such important days of their lives. It’s a fun hobby that I’m passionate about.
Who is someone you look up to?
My mom is someone I’ve always looked up to. She’s such a strong, independent woman. She’s a hard worker, really driven, kind, caring, and compassionate. I see a lot of her in myself, and I’m proud of that. I’m thankful every day that she is my mother.
What is a philosophy or motto you live by?
“Just keep swimming” (Dory, Finding Nemo, 2003). Ever since this movie came out, I’ve lived by this. In the good times and the bad times, “just keep swimming.”
