Nina Tomic, a teacher in The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) Michael F. Downey Center for Child Development, was nominated for Staff Spotlight by multiple colleagues because she is a “committed, loving teacher who cares deeply about the children and their education,” and  “she does an amazing job with her students even when they are having a tough time. She knows so much about each one of her students and clearly cares so much. We are so lucky to have her!”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I’ve been at the Downey Center for Child Development since January 2024 but previously worked as a BCSM on Salem End Road from 2017-19.

Why did you switch from working in NECC’s residential program to working at the Downey Center for Child Development?

I switched positions because after eight years of working with individuals with autism, I wanted to gain experience with typical developing children and also gain a better perspective on typical developmental milestones and behaviors.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I truly love getting to spend my days with all the students in my classroom. But my absolute favorite is watching them play, grow, and build friendships with each other.

Why did you choose a career in working with children?

I think I always inherently knew I would be working with kids in some capacity. It’s a rewarding job, no matter what your role is in their lives!

Why NECC?

I heard about NECC back in 2016 when I first moved to Massachusetts after I graduated from college. While at NECC, I pursued a career in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and eventually got my master’s degree. I am now currently working towards my BCBA certification.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

I’m a huge bookworm! Last year, I read a total of 135 books.

Who is someone you look up to?

I look up to my mom! She has always encouraged and supported me in what I wanted to do, as long as it made me happy.

What is your life philosophy or a motto you like to live by?

I have a reminder on my phone that goes off every day at 4 p.m. that says, “Gratitude.” It reminds me to take a quick moment to pause, reflect on my day (the good and the bad), and appreciate everything I have in my life.
