Mary Nevins has worked as lead teacher in one of The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) partner classrooms in Barnstable, MA, over the last year. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because she is “an amazing lead teacher in Barnstable. She is a strong advocate for our students and the staff who work in her room. Mary has been great with training and making sure new tutors are comfortable within their position. Mary comes to work every day with such a positive outlook and a huge smile on her face.”

What are your duties working in the PSS program?

My duties include creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for my students.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of the job is seeing my students make such amazing progress, no matter how small or big it may be.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I have always wanted to be a teacher but decided to specialize in special education to make a difference in my students’ lives and help to create a more inclusive community.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC?

Yes, I am currently enrolled in the Simmons University graduate program for special education with an autism specialization.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

My favorite hobby is traveling the world. This photo is from when I was in Athens, Greece.

Who is someone you look up to?

Someone I look up to is my grandmother. She always wanted to be a teacher but never got to fulfill this dream of hers. She is one of the main reasons why I do this job.
