Justin Bashaw, MSEd, an ACE® client support specialist, has worked at The New England Center for Children® (NECC®) for 19 years. He was nominated for Staff Spotlight because he “goes above and beyond to be a friendly face and ACE expert for both our clients and for NECC staff. Justin is a bright, positive team member and makes it a point to get to know folks on a personal level. NECC is lucky to have him, his professional expertise, and personal cheer!
How long have you worked for NECC?
I’m proud to say that I’ve worked at NECC for 19 years. I began my career here in 2005 as a level 2 teacher on the Parker Road residential team. In 2008, I became West 1’s education coordinator and held that position for 11 years. I joined the ACE team in 2019.
What are your duties working as an ACE support specialist?
As an ACE support specialist, I’m responsible for providing ongoing support to clients around the world. Since I’m on the ACE Help Desk team, I serve as the first point of contact for users seeking assistance over email, phone, or in person. Our team provides support to clients by answering questions and troubleshooting issues.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is knowing that the work we do helps learners of all ages. Also, I really enjoy supporting both new and experienced staff at NECC for all their ACE system needs. I like to tell people that I’m a friendly face from the ACE and I’m here to help!
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?
I always knew I enjoyed working with kids. In college, I interned at a behavioral health network which provided me with my first opportunity to care for the needs of an individual diagnosed with autism. It was an amazing experience that opened my eyes to the world of special education.
Why NECC?
I chose to begin my teaching career at NECC because I was determined to make a positive difference in the lives of others. NECC also allowed me the opportunity to earn my master’s degree while working full-time.
Which grad programs or teacher training have you taken advantage of at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
Graduating from Simmons University increased my confidence as an educator and taught me to utilize a variety of teaching styles to meet the needs of all learners.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
I’m an avid surfcaster, always in pursuit of the elusive striped bass.
Who is someone you look up to?
I’ve always looked up to my dad – he’s the man!
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
Strive for progress rather than perfection.
