Sam Cole, a level 2 teacher on The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) School Street residential team, has worked at NECC since June 2023. He was nominated by a colleague because of the “remarkable dedication he has shown in leading the Pride Alliance Employee Resource Group (ERG). Sam is always willing to try new ideas and approaches to engaging members. What stands out most about Sam is his determination and adaptability. He consistently goes above and beyond, demonstrating a ‘whatever-it-takes’ attitude to ensure the ERG’s success. This quality is essential in an ERG lead, reflecting resilience, creativity, and a focus on outcomes that foster inclusion.”
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is the connections that I have formed with my students. I love how NECC is a setting that allows for one-on-one teaching, which has really helped me to connect with my students. It has been amazing getting to know them and watching them grow.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?
I have always enjoyed working with children, and working with children with autism sounded like a rewarding experience.
Why NECC?
I first learned about NECC a few years ago after connecting at a career fair on my college campus. It sounded like a great place to work. A year later, when I was preparing to graduate college, I had heard great things about working at NECC and thought it would be a great experience.
Why did you decide to become the lead of the Pride Alliance ERG?
I decided to lead the Pride Alliance ERG because I thought it would be a great opportunity to connect with more people at NECC and create positive change. It has been a great outlet for me to advocate on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ community at NECC and has given me the opportunity to work with executive leadership to discuss the areas NECC can make improvements towards creating a more inclusive community.
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC?
I am taking a Simmons University course this semester, which I’ve been enjoying so far! I’m planning on applying to the Simmons Master of Education program in the spring.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
Something my colleagues might be surprised to learn about me is that I have a love for nature and the outdoors. I was a Boy Scout and even made it to the Eagle Scout rank.
Who is someone you look up to?
I really look up to both of my parents. My dad is incredibly hardworking and always wants to make sure people are taken care of. My mom is really kind and compassionate. I am so grateful for all of the support that they have given me.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
“You must be the change you wish to see in this world” – Mahatma Gandhi. I think this quote speaks to the idea that if you don’t like the way things are, you do what you can to change things.
