Dana Jaffe has worked as a level 2 teacher for The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) Intensive Instruction Program (IIP) since October 2023. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight because “she continuously brings a positive and calm energy to the team. She is a great advocate for not only her case students but also every student on the team.”
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love finding creative ways to connect with my students and enjoy watching them take small steps to reach their goals.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?
Special education fits my strengths and passions; I’ve always been interested in atypical child development, and I’ve always loved mentoring and working with kids. It is very rewarding for me to make an impact on my students.
Why NECC?
NECC is an evidence-based, well-known institution, which I took into account when looking to work here. I’ve stayed at NECC because I feel supported by my coworkers and supervisors, and I find it to be a positive teaching and learning environment for staff and students.
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
I’m currently taking a non-degree course for the Simmons University master’s program and in the application process to officially begin the program next semester. So far, it makes me think more about my students outside of work and how different teaching techniques and IEP components could be applicable to them.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
I love running. I ran competitively in high school, but since then, it’s mostly been for fun and exercise. One of my goals in life is to run a marathon, ideally the Boston Marathon!
Who is someone you look up to?
I look up to my psychology professor in college whom I was close to and try to stay in touch with. She is so bright and caring, and her classes were very engaging. She was the one who recommended that I look into NECC for a post-graduation job, so I’m very grateful to her!
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
I like to live as if I am viewing the glass half full. I’m naturally a happy, optimistic person, and I try to bring this energy to work, too! I also like to be supportive of others when their glass is half empty; it may be cheesy, but I try to choose kindness whenever I can!
