Shannon Rawson, a level 2 teacher for The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) Westborough 2 residence, has worked for NECC for two years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because “the way she interacts with her students is truly special—she always knows how to bring a smile to their faces and consistently goes above and beyond to pay it forward. She always looks out for everyone’s best interests. Shannon introduced me to NECC, and being part of this community has been incredibly rewarding.”
How long have you been at NECC?
I have just started my third year at NECC, and I am part of the Westborough 2 (Best Crew!) team! I have been a case manager, back-up core shift manager (CSM), and am currently a CSM.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job would be being a part of my students’ lives and being able to see them make progress and achieve their goals.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism? Why NECC?
I fell in love during my undergrad internship, which showed me that I wanted to help advocate for individuals with autism. NECC provides students with the ability to achieve their goals and sets them up for a more independent life once they graduate. I have loved working on West 2 and being able to see everything the girls have achieved while at NECC, as well as in their lives outside of NECC.
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
I am currently in the Western New England University program for my Master of Science in Behavior Analysis. I have taken the materials that I have learned and applied them to my students. I am often thinking about my students while in class.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn? (Any hidden talents, bad habits, interesting hobbies, etc.)
My colleagues might be surprised to learn that I graduated high school with my cosmetology license and still use it to this day!
Who is someone you look up to?
I look up to my mom. She has shown me how to become a strong and hardworking woman. She has always encouraged me to chase my dreams.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
A motto that I live by is that “The best is yet to come.”
