Gary Burnell has worked as the assistant director of Facilities at The New England Center for Children (NECC) for about a year and a half. He was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because “while his work is often behind the scenes, Gary’s readiness to assist with projects big and small speaks volumes. His dedication and hard work contribute to the backbone of NECC, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and remains well-maintained. Gary’s contributions are invaluable, helping to keep our community operational and thriving.”
What are your duties as assistant director of facilities?
I assist Kevin Tavares in the day-to-day management of maintenance at the residential homes and staff/intern housing. I’m also responsible for maintaining the mechanical side of the Dukakis Aquatics Center.
What is your favorite part of your job?
There are certainly a lot of things I like about this job, but my favorite part is taking care of the requests staff have and knowing that it makes their day easier when things are working properly. There are a lot of great people who work here who are appreciative of the work that the maintenance department does on a daily basis. I find it truly rewarding to be able to assist in whatever way I can to help make the staff and students’ lives easier.
Why did you decide to work at NECC?
Although I enjoyed my previous job and the people I worked with, I was looking for something more challenging and rewarding. I found both of those things here and then some.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
I enjoy 5K obstacle races, open-water swimming, and skiing.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
I follow the philosophy of “live the life you love.”
