National Award
for Model Professional Development
The
New England Center for Children was named
as a recipient of the National Award for
Model Professional Development in 2000 by
the U.S. Department of Education. The National
Awards Panel cited NECC’s efforts
to improve teachers' knowledge and skills
and raise student achievement, highlighting
the following strengths:
- There is strong
emphasis on data; many sources of data
are used to determine student progress.
- The program is
strongly based in research.
- It seems to do
a good job with the fundamentals of professional
development. The elements are executed
well.
- There is a plan
that guides the professional development.
It is an appropriate plan for the context.
- There is a strong
impact on teacher effectiveness and student
learning.
NECC was one of just
four schools nationwide to receive the award.
Established in 1996, the National Awards Program
recognizes comprehensive efforts that improve
teacher effectiveness and student achievement
and is consistent with a set of principles
for professional development that are based
on the best available research and exemplary
practice.
