Remembering Michael F. Downey
are deeply saddened by the passing of our great friend and colleague, Michael
F. Downey, Chief Financial Officer of NECC. For 35 years, Mike combined a great
sense of humor with extraordinary financial management skills to help build
today's NECC. Mike served as our outside accountant from 1978 until he became
our CFO in 1997.
is universally recognized as one of the financial and strategic architects of
NECC. When he first met us, we served 15 students in a former nurses' residence
on the grounds of Taunton State Hospital. We had little money, few resources
and often struggled to meet our payroll.
to Mike, NECC has been able to accomplish in one generation what would take
most organizations many generations. Today, we serve children with autism
around the world and we possess excellent facilities and resources. Our
research, graduate programs and the Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia® exist in no
small part due to his contributions.
Mike gave up his private accounting practice in 1997 to join us, he had more lucrative
options but chose NECC because he believed in our mission and wanted to help more
children. He became one of NECC's most ardent supporters and was tremendously
proud of his role in our growth. Mike will always be missed but his compassion
for others, love of family, and commitment to excellence lives on.
Before Mike's passing, NECC Board of Directors
voted unanimously to name our new employee day care center the Michael F. Downey
Center for Child Development. Mike had overseen all aspects of this project and
was greatly honored by this recognition.
did great things together for children with autism and had a lot of fun while
doing them. All of us at NECC extend our condolences to Mike's wife Cookie and
the entire Downey Family whom we have grown to know and love.
