Consulting & Training > CALM®

For more than 25 years, The New England Center for Children has dealt with some of the most difficult and aggressive types of violent behavior that can occur in a classroom setting. Based on this extensive experience, we have designed a program to anticipate these behaviors, diffuse any potentially harmful outbursts, and to control any incidents that do occur.

Known as CALM®, our verbal and physical de-escalation program has been proven to effectively control even the most violent situations with less risk to students. NECC can share safe and effective strategies for preventing and managing all kinds of challenging behaviors, as well as protective measures to minimize the possibility of self-injury or injury to others. NECC offers a variety of CALM® training programs that can be tailored to the specific needs of public school systems. They are all held off-site, with the exception of the Expanded CALM® Training (held either off-site or monthly at NECC’s Southborough campus).

1) Introduction to DOE Regulations
Designed as a 90-minute program, this
course, or an equivalent, is required for
all certified teachers in Massachusetts.

4) Expanded CALM® Training
This course, which requires 22 hours of
study, provides the same instruction as the
Basic CALM® Training, along with additional
techniques such as sitting and floor restraints.

2) Overview of Effective Crisis Management
This 3-hour course is also a state
requirement. Topics will include an intro-
duction to the DOE regulations, de-
escalation methods, preventative methods,
and safety precautions.
5) Custom-Designed Services
This “Training of Trainers” course will allow
others to teach the CALM® system to colleagues and fellow professionals. Courses can be designed to meet particular needs, so contact NECC for more details.
3) Basic CALM® Training
This 16-hour course covers all of the pre-
vious topics in more detail, as well as phy-
sical holding skills, and provides the opp-
ortunity to practice simulated restraint.
